Required
Materials Graphing Calculator. A TI-83/83+/84/84+ graphing calculator, or
equivalent is required.
Online Access. Each student must have an access code for
the Course Compass – MyMathLab website.
The access codes are sold in the OCCC bookstore. The codes may also be purchased online by
registering at www.CourseCompass.com.
Required
Materials (cont’d.) Notebook. Students must maintain and bring to each
class a three-ring notebook with divider pages (no spirals), containing the
departmental Math 1513 syllabus, this section syllabus, and all worked homework
problems. These notebooks will be
checked periodically and grades will be recorded for this work.
Optional
Materials Text.
Bittinger,
Grading Policy Grades will be determined from homework assignments,
in-class activities, notebook assignments, quizzes, regression project, and
five written tests. Grades will be
calculated as follows:
Homework 200 points ( = 5 sets x avg. 40 pts/set)
Tests 700 points ( = 5 tests x 140 pts/test)
Activities, Notebooks,
Quizzes and Projects 100 points
Total 1000 points
Tests Five
one-hour tests will be given during scheduled class time. There will be no make-up exams for the hour
tests. An optional comprehensive final
test will be given the last day of class, Thursday, 13 May 2010. The optional final test grade will replace a
missed test. If no test has been missed,
the final test grade can replace the lowest grade made on the hour tests.
Homework
Homework will be
done on the Course Compass - MyMathLab system.
Homework assignments will be due each week before class time. Online homework items can be attempted
multiple times until either the student has achieved 100% or until the
assignment deadline has passed. Students
receive immediate feedback upon submitting online assignments, as well as
tutorial help items while working the problems. Grades are recorded immediately
in the online grade book, which students may access at any time to check their
grades. (Test grades also appear in the
online grade book.)
Students
will see written assignments in the printed course syllabus. While these are helpful for extra practice
and in test preparation, they are NOT required assignments for this class.
Attendance Attendance
will be recorded at the end of each class.
Regular attendees who actively participate in class discussions will
receive special consideration in the event their final averages are slightly
below a letter grade cutoff. For
example, regular attendees with 89.5% final averages will often be awarded an
“A.” Those whose attendance is irregular
are, unfortunately, most often no longer enrolled in the class at the time
final grades are awarded, but in any case, they do not receive special
consideration.
End of Semester To be considered for credit, all work must be completed and
submitted no later than
Calculator Help An excellent set of TI-83/83+/84/84+ help materials is
available on the OCCC Website at www.occc.edu/college_algebra .
Tutoring You’ve
already paid for tutoring. It’s
available for the asking in the Math Lab.
