Sometimes when I can't
figure out why I continue to teach, someone sends the answer.
Here's the text of an e-mail that arrived a few days ago.

Mr. Oates,
You probably do not remember me, but I was in your Math for
Health Careers last fall. I just wanted to let you know how much you helped
me. I was in nursing transition in the early summer and I took a
nursing math test that I actually felt confident about and passed the first
time. I had to take my annual recertification at work this week and got all
of the math problems right for the first time as well. I gained that
knowledge and confidence in your class. I have been accepted to the Career
Ladder Pathway nursing program for the fall semester at OCCC. I just wanted
you to know that your class helped me to achieve that goal. In fact, when I
was preparing for the test, I went to your website because I knew I could
brush up on my skills there. I just wanted to thank you for your help and
influence and let you know that you do make a difference.
Best wishes,
